Technical Tours

1. Civitavecchia Port

Wednesday, September 11th 2024, 02:30 pm – 08.00 pm

Meeting point: Pontificia Università Gregoriana – Piazza della Pilotta, 4, Roma

The Port of Civitavecchia (Rome) is the main port of Lazio Region (70 km north of Rome) and the busiest cruise terminal in the Med Sea with nearly 3 million passengers each year. Civitavecchia port was born in 108 AD due to Emperor Trajan on a design by Apollodoro of Damascus in order to provide a safe shelter to the Roman fleet. The harbour of Civitavecchia (“Centumcellae”) was created on a rocky coastline and remained for centuries with the original layout. In modern times under the govern of the Popes it was enriched by the works of famous renaissance architects (eg. Bernini, Bramante) and its symmetric central planshape with converging arms and detached offshore breakwater was the model of the “ideal port design”.

Significant developments were made in the XXth century and large extension works are underway, following the evolution of shipping traffic and new masterplans by the local Port Authority. In particular the long vertically composite breakwater reaches a waterdepth of 35 m and it is now extended with special caissons with turbines to generate energy from the waves.

The visit will include the cruise terminal along the main breakwater, the commercial terminals and the new large yacht basin. Some new ongoing works will be visible.

Price: included in the registration fees

  • € 40 (VAT included) for accompanying person

The visit includes:

  • An English speaking tour leader
  • Headphones
  • Visit Port of Civitavecchia
  • Private transportation from Rome to the Venue

The visit will be held only with a minimum of 15 people.

2. Fiumicino: Imperial port of Rome and new harbour works

Wednesday, September 11th 2024, 02:30 pm – 08.00 pm

Meeting point: Pontificia Università Gregoriana – Piazza della Pilotta, 4, Roma

One of the largest harbours of antiquity was created in the 1st century AD by Roman emperor Claudius with later expansion by Trajan (”Portus”). The impressive ancient breakwaters and quay walls are buried today inside and around Fiumicino airport and can be visited within a unique guided techno-archaeological tour. The hexagonal port basin with the old warehouses and columns are still visible. The recently renovated Roman Ship Museum can also be visited.  Moreover the new ongoing works (2023-26) for the expansion of the Fiumicino inlet harbour (river Tiber) will be presented and shown. The new infrastructure will host the big fleet of fishing vessels that now unsafely dock along the riverbanks. Works include the construction of about 1 km long rubble- mound breakwaters (including prefabrication of Antifer cubes), the dredging of 120.000 m3 of sediment and the filling of two reclamation areas along the existing seashore (see project plan). Quay walls are made with decks on piles and sheet-piles. The biggest engineering challenge for Fiumicino new seaport is the construction of the sea works on a very soft seabed (thick layer of silty clay), with expected settlements up to 2 m, requiring the implementation of a specific monitoring system and advanced geotechnical reinforcement design solutions.

Price: included in the registration fees

  • € 40 (VAT included) for accompanying person

The visit includes:

  • An English speaking tour leader
  • Headphones
  • Visit of Portus
  • Private transportation from Rome to the Venue

The visit will be held only with a minimum of 15 people.

3. Ostia beach protections, marina and Ancient Ostia

Wednesday, September 11th 2024, 02:30 pm – 08.00 pm

Meeting point: Pontificia Università Gregoriana – Piazza della Pilotta, 4, Roma

The delta of river Tiber has been undergoing severe erosion in the last decades. The popular sandy beaches at Ostia (about 25 km from Rome) have been protected with various types of defences (emerged and submerged detached breakwaters, sand nourishments, drainage pipes) and further projects are underway to improve their high recreational value.

Just beside the left side of the mouth a large modern yacht harbour was built in 2000 with 800 berths up to 60 m long. The marina has an original external symmetric layout with two rubble mound breakwaters and central absorbing shingle beach. The water exchange in the semiclosed basins is improved by pumping seawater through four pipes crossing both breakwaters.

Finally the beautiful neighbouring ruins of the ancient Ostia settlement (“Ostia Antica”) may be visited within a guided archaeological tour.

Price: included in the registration fees

  • € 40 (VAT included) for accompanying person

The visit includes:

  • An English speaking tour leader
  • Headphones
  • Visit of Archaeological area of Ostia Antica
  • Private transportation from Rome to the Venue
